Join us in our sunflower growing competition!

May 3 2022 by: Jo M

Throughout May we will be giving away sunflower seeds with every order and inviting our lovely Naturtinters to grow their own giant sunflower. To make it even more fun, we’re running a competition to find the “Best Bloom” and encourage everyone to share photos of their sunflowers by email or on social.

But why sunflowers? Well, firstly, lots of our products contain sunflower extracts for their happy hair benefits;

Naturtint’s Colour Fixing Shampoo & Conditioner use Organic Sunflower Seed Extract to naturally seal split ends and lock in colour.

The Anti-Ageing CC Cream uses Sunflower Floral water for its antioxidant and anti-ageing properties.

Naturtint’s styling duo contains Sunflower Seed Extract to help reduce colour fade.

And secondly – and more importantly – sunflowers are a much needed food source for bees when sadly, these hard-working winged wonders are in severe decline as a result of habitat loss, pollution and the use of pesticides. Not only is it heartbreaking to think of sunny days without bees buzzing from flower to flower, but without bees the world would be in big trouble. Much of the food we need to survive is pollinated by bees and the trees and flowers that provide habitats for wildlife are also pollinated by our fuzzy friends. Put simply, bees are of huge ecological importance.

By growing bee-friendly plants like sunflowers we are providing a valuable food source for bees (and other insects too, plus many garden birds) as well as brightening our green spaces – who doesn’t love to see a sunshine yellow sunflower beaming on a summer’s day?!

Some fascinating facts about our fluffy friends!

1. Vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and cucumber rely on the pollination of bees, as do apricots, strawberries, apples, tomatoes and almonds. (Source: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk)

2. There are around 270 species of bee in the UK alone! (Source: www.wildlifetrusts.org)

3. Bees can’t see red-based colours very well, so bright yellow blooms like sunflowers are easier for them to spot.

4. 20th May is ‘World Bee Day’, designated so by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of bees.

5. Bees communicate by dancing! A ’round’ dance tells fellow bees in their hive that there is a good source of pollen nearby and a ‘waggle’ dance indicates how far away it is and in what direction. How clever is that?!

Naturtint’s ‘Best in Show’ sunflower competition!

Once you receive your sunflower seeds, we hope you’ll join us in having a go at growing a sunflower in your garden or in a pot. And then, when you think your sunflower is in full bloom, tag us in a photo on Facebook or Instagram or send by email to [email protected]!

We’ll pick our favourite entry to win ‘Best in Show’ and its green-fingered owner will win an online voucher worth £30 to spend with us.

If you think we’ll be impressed by the height of your sunflower or the size of the flower head, make sure we can appreciate it fully by including a size reference -perhaps by standing next to it or holding a box of Naturtint near the flower head! 🤣

And don’t worry if it’s not the tallest or biggest, if we think it’s the sunniest or brightest, you’re still in with a chance of winning!

Entries close Monday 12th September and the winner will be announced on social media and contacted to claim their prize by 26th September.

Here’s our very own Carolyn planting her sunflower seeds ready to take part (but don’t worry, none of us can win!);
