We don’t need to tell you that the whole Naturtint range is enriched with natural ingredients, but did you know that each is carefully selected to have a positive or beneficial effect on a specific hair type or condition? All products will utilise a blend of natural ingredients, but often there is a ‘hero’ natural powerhouse in each sub-range! Below we look at some of these ‘specialist’ ingredients in more detail!

AMARANTHUS

You’ll find this versatile grain oil extract in our NEW Curl-defining range. We chose it for its exceptional protective properties. Amaranthus works as a natural hair strengthener, protecting and restoring strands from damage caused by heat, pollution, chemical treatments, etc. It’s a natural source of squalene and the amino acid lysine, which help to stimulate hair growth and strengthen the keratin in your hair, reducing breakage.

FUN FACT: in the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors banned the plant’s cultivation in South America, fearing that its spiritual connection would affect Catholicism’s introduction on the continent.

Many parts of the plant, including the leaves and seeds, are edible and are frequently used as a source of food in India as well as in South America. Amaranthus caudatus is commonly known in gardening circles as a more colloquial Love Lies Bleeding.

CHAMOMILE

Chamomile, a medicinal plant, has long been used for natural hair lightening and contains three flavonoids called apigenin, quercetin, and azulene. Apigenin and azulene work together to brighten the hair, while quercetin is the one that lightens the hair.

Chamomile has been used traditionally to lighten hair as these flavonoids gradually cause hair to lighten without stripping it of essential moisture. When applied to natural blonde or light brown hair, it gives intense golden highlights, enhancing the radiance and shine. Plus, regular use will offer protection against the sun and external aggressors, reducing breakage and increasing strength and flexibility.

Rather unsurprisingly, you’ll find this ingredient in our Chamomile range for blonde hair!

ROSEMARY

Many of us already know rosemary from adding a few sprigs to our roasted veggies, but apart from that, it’s also a very popular ingredient in hair care products.

Rosemary essential oil is extracted from the Rosmarinus officinalis shrub, which is evergreen and characterised by its needle-like leaves and woody fragrance.

While these shrubs may be native to the Mediterranean – Tunisia, Morocco and France – they can also grow in the UK, Mexico, America and northern Africa.

FUN FACT: Rosemary gets its name from the Latin phrase, ‘Dew of the Sea,’ because it’s native to the Mediterranean’s sea cliffs. The name is also representative of its drought-resistant properties.

You’ll find it in our 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner Bar for Frequent Use where it helps specifically to cleanse, condition, protect and rejuvenate hair.

MACA

Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) is a nutrient-rich tuber vegetable cultivated in South America, for hundreds of years. This powerful superfood is packed with beneficial nutrients that promote healthy hair growth and help keep your locks looking their best.

FUN FACT: Maca root has been used as a natural remedy for hair breakage and other hair-related issues for centuries. In fact, it is thought to be one of the first plants ever used to treat these conditions!

Maca root contains several vitamins and minerals essential for a healthy scalp, including B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, and zinc. These nutrients help support the scalp’s overall health, promote healthy growth, and prevent damage. It’s also high in saponin, an antibacterial compound, which has been proven to be a powerful scalp cleanser, ensuring that your follicles stay clean and unclogged, so that hair has an optimal environment for growth. Hence why we use it in our Strengthening range!

Maca root can also help to add volume and shine to your hair. The amino acids and fatty acids found in maca root help nourish the scalp and hair follicles, providing vital nutrients that can improve your hair’s overall health and appearance.

SUNFLOWER FLORAL WATER

Sunflower Floral Water is naturally antioxidant and anti-ageing, but it also helps lock in colour and tackles pesky split ends. Floral waters are left over from extracting essential oils in a distillery process and are gentler on our hair and skin than essential oils. Sunflower Floral Water still contains high levels of valuable minerals and vitamins to nourish and moisturise our scalp and locks.

Because this is such an effective and versatile natural ingredient, you’ll find it in lots of our products, including our Root Retouch Cremes, Colour Fixing aftercare, and the Hairspray and Styling Foam.

PURPLE RICE

Considered a superfood, purple rice is rich in vitamins, amino acids and sugars. It intensely hydrates and nourishes parched hair, restoring lost vitality and splendour. In the Naturtint range, we use it in the Hair Food Purple Rice Mask, to intensely moisturise dry and parched hair. In the Silver Shampoo and CC Cream, Purple Rice extract is added for its antioxidant and calming effects, providing comfort and care for the scalp, whilst also protecting hair from external aggressors.

FUN FACT: Purple Rice is sometimes known as ‘Forbidden rice’ and earned its name because it was once reserved only for the wealthy and powerful, including Chinese emperors, to ensure their health and long life, and forbidden to anyone else!
