Now, this myth is partially true. Although the word ‘ruin’ could be a little too harsh.

Imagine the scenario, you’re getting ready for a night on the town with the girls. There will be gin and plenty of grub – bliss.

After you’ve washed your hair, you apply some heat protection spray in hope that your curlers won’t damage your locks.

You’ve read rave-reviews online about a new curl-defying gel, so you desperately scrunch this through your locks. The curls are bouncy, defined and you secure them in place with hairspray.

Fast-forward to the next morning and you’re tired, groggy and have 101 things to do. You splash dry shampoo all over your roots and head out for the day.

Using a combination of styling products (and you’ve used four there without even thinking!) on a regular basis can dry out your hair and your scalp and leave your hair feeling dry and heavy.

But it’s not all that bad. Like most things in life, it’s all about balance and moderation.

We spoke to our technical adviser, Kerry, who gave us her opinion on styling products.

Kerry explained: “certain styling products, if free from nasty chemicals, can actually be beneficial for our hair.

“Heat protection sprays, leave-in conditioners and curling/straightening gels can act as a barrier between your hair and your straighteners/curlers. This minimises heat damage and protects against environmental influences.

“Every time we wash our hair, we rid our hair of essential oils. Using dry shampoo means that we’re not carelessly washing away these oils. On the flip side, over-frequent use of dry shampoo can create a film on your scalp and make hair feel heavy and greasy. A balance between the two is key and always use a gentler alternative if possible”.

“When choosing a hairspray, ensure that is has no alcohol in the formula. Alcohol can cause hair to become dry and brittle, making it prone to snapping”.

Our advice would be to use products that are multipurpose – products that protect against heat damage, keep your locks in place and nourish your hair simultaneously.

It’s also important to avoid products that are full of nasty chemicals and harsh ingredients.

Naturtint’s Hairspray provides hold and protection with no tackiness or build-up, giving flexible hold and vibrant shine. The formula contains no alcohol and 99.2% natural ingredients.

Baobab extract protects locks from external damage, lemon water guards against free radicals from pollution and sunflower seed extract seals split ends, helping to lock in colour.

Naturtint’s Anti-Ageing CC Cream is a leave-in intensive anti-ageing and restorative treatment. Formulated with natural and organic plant and seed oils and extract, the cream helps to combat the main signs of hair ageing and protects locks from damage, heat, UV and pollution.

Hydrolysed wheat protein adds volume, strength and reduces breakage by up to 80%, hydrolysed pea extract repairs damaged hair fibres and sunflower floral water seals split ends and locks in colour.

Products in Naturtint’s Aftercare & Styling range are multipurpose, gentle and bursting with natural ingredients that nourish your hair and scalp.

So there we are, myth partially busted!
